Breast feeding: What is left besides the poetry?

A statement by the Nutrition Committee, Canadian Pediatric Society points to significant advantages for the breast-fed infant as ascertained by evaluation of up-to-date information. The statement addresses five pertinent topics: (1) new information about the biological properties of human milk; (2) epidemiology of breast feeding; (3) factors responsible for the decline of breast-feeding; (4) suggestions on ways to increase breast-feeding; and (5) summary of recommendations. All full-term newborns should be breast-fed except in the few instances where contraindications are present.
