Vase bamboo stalks: a new option for cut foliage

The bamboo is considered an ornamental plant, worldwide used in the landscape. Its use as cut foliage presents high potential, however limited by the fact that after harvesting it shows low durability, rapidly occurring rolling up and loss of brightness of leaves. Postharvest works with bamboo are lacking in the international research literature and this project had as objective to develop suitable technology for bamboo leaf conservation. Initially, the quality and the process of withering were analyzed for cut stalks of the genus Phyllostachys and Bambusa. Considering the visual aspect, the species Phyllostachys bambusoides Siebold and Zucc., Phyllostachys nigra Munro, Bambusa nutans Wall. and Bambusa multiplex (Lour.) Räusch. were selected. After postharvest evaluations it was concluded that the species of Bambusa are more suitable for using as cut foliage when compared to the Phyllostachys species. For the further tests with preserving solutions, seven species of Bambusa were tried: Bambusa longipiculata, Bambusa ‘Champion 3’, Bambusa ‘Champion 6’, Bambusa maligensis, Bambusa tudoides, Bambusa nutans and Bambusa multiplex. In this experiment, the treatment with 300 mg L-1 GA3 for 24 hours produced stalks with lesser significant loss of fresh mass compared to the control. After these studies, we can conclude that there are species of bamboo that do not need postharvest treatment, others need to be treated with GA3, whereas for others the use of clean water and cut basal stem are sufficient. The results will depend on the physiological stadium of the stalks at harvesting.
