Dominant zebra mutant in pearl millet

A chlorophyll-deficient zebra mutant pearl millet, Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br., was found in a breeding population. The plant had alternating green and yellow crossbands on leaf blades. Yellow bands turned green before maturity. Zebra plants were crossed with six inbred lines to determine the inheritance pattern of the trait. The number of zebra and normal plants was observed in F1, F2, and testcross populations. The zebra trait was present in all F1 plants, suggesting that it was a dominant trait, unlike recessive zebra mutants previously reported in millet. The ratio of zebra to normal plants approached the 3:1 and 1:1 ratios expected for the F2 and testcross populations, respectively, indicating that a single dominant gene is involved. This gene may be useful as a genetic marker.
