Site differences in the fatty acid composition of subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese women

Adipose tissue samples from three subcutaneous sites were obtained from 22 obese women, and analyzed for fatty acid composition using gas-liquid chromatography. Site differences were observed in total amounts of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, and in their ratios. Highly significant differences were demonstrated for six fatty acids, depending whether the sample was taken from thigh, abdomen or upper arm. Most saturated fatty acids are present in smaller proportions than are unsaturated fatty acids in the thigh. Marked differences in fatty acid composition of adipose tissue between obese and normal subjects was not seen, with the exception of palmitoleic acid. A short-term weight-loss program induced a change in saturated-unsaturated fatty acid ratio in obese patients.
