The types, symptoms, and treatment of diabetes, as well as risk factors associated with developing the disease, are described in this review article. The importance of weight reduction and exercise in preventing and/or controlling Type II diabetes is explained. Guidelines are provided for developing a sensible low-calorie eating plan and a beneficial exercise program. Types of complications (heart, eye, kidney, nerves) associated with uncontrolled diabetes are identified. Recent advances in diabetes treatment, such as the development of genetically engineered insulin and breakthroughs in research on pancreas transplants, are explored.
