Effect of modified atmospheres and refrigeration temperatures on survival of eggs and larvae of the Caribbean fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) in laboratory diet

Caribbean fruit fly Anastrepha suspensa (Loew) eggs and larvae in laboratory diet were exposed to combinations of 2, 10, or 20% oxygen (O2) and 20, 50, or 80% carbon dioxide (CO2) at 15.6 or 10 degrees C for 3, 5, 7, or 10 d. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that, within the limits of this experiment, mortality did not vary with O2 concentration and was only slightly influenced by temperature. Insect response varied directly with CO2 concentration and time of exposure. The regression equation was used to compute the combinations of exposure time and CO2 level that would produce 100% mortality at two temperatures.
