Genetic Diversity in Advanced Generations of Aromatic Rice

Mahalanobis D² statistics was used to study the nature and magnitude of genetic diversity among 55 aromatic rice genotypes. The genotypes were grouped into nine clusters. Cluster IV, had highest number of genotypes (18) followed by cluster II (10) and cluster I (8). The genotypes falling in cluster IV (10.48) had maximum divergence followed by cluster III (9.66) and cluster II (8.65). The inter cluster distance ranged from 9.53 to 43.80 as exhibited between cluster VI and VIII and cluster V and IX, respectively. A wide range of variation was observed in cluster means for all the characters studied. The genotypes from cluster V recorded highest mean value for kernel elongation ratio, whereas cluster IX recorded highest mean values for number of productive tillers per plant, panicle length, kernel length, L/B ratio, kernel length after cooking and volume expansion ratio. The genotypes of cluster I possessed long slender grains whereas the genotypes of cluster IV recorded highest mean value for number of filled grains per panicle with less kernel length and kernel length after cooking. Crossing genotypes from distant clusters was suggested to generate desired segregants with good grain qualityand higher yield.
