Evaluation of tobacco leaf protein concentrate as a supplement in broiler diets

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate tobacco leaf protein concentrate (TLPC) as a protein supplement and pigment source in diets of broiler chicks. Dietary additions of TLPC in Experiment 1 were 0, 5, 10 and 15% at the expense of corn and soybean meal. In Experiment 2, a commercial marigold petal extract product and TLPC were both added to the diet at levels furnishing 12, 18 and 24 mg xanthophyll per kg. Adding TLPC to the diet resulted in a significant (P less than .05) depression in weight gain. Feed intake, feed conversion, liver and intestinal weights were not influenced by TLPC. However, kidney weights were increased in the chicks fed TLPC at 15% of the diet. In Experiment 2, TLPC in the diet resulted in a growth depression and poorer feed conversion (P less than .05). However, body weights were lower when TLPC was used as a supplement. Pigmentation data indicated that TLPC was an acceptable source of xanthophyll when compared to a commercially available marigold petal extract product.
