Development of Area Specific Mineral Mixture for Bovine and Impact Assessment of Post Supplementation on Livelihood of Farmers of Eastern Uttar Pradesh

Present study was conducted with the objective to evaluate the mineral status in soil-plant-animal (bovine) in six districts of Uttar Pradesh and to formulate area specific mineral mixture based on the results and deficient state obtained in cattle and buffalo and finally impact assessment post supplementation. Results showed that soil-plantanimal of these districts had deficient concentration of zinc with high prevalence of deficiency. Copper and cobalt level were marginally deficient in soil-plant-animal of these districts. Iron concentration was normal or high in soilplant-animal with no prevalence of deficiency. There was non-significant difference in concentration of minerals between cattle and buffaloes. However the concentrations were slightly lower in buffalo compared to cattle. Formulated area specific mineral mixture supplementation for 60 days resulted in significant increase in milk yield, non-significant increase in milk fat percentage and lactation length in both lactating cattle and buffalo. Livestock owners expenditure incurred on health management was significantly decreased due to better health, fertility and immune status of mineral sufficient animal and non-significant decrease in maintenance cost. Growing heifer showed significant increase in body weight gain and decrease time for attainment of puberty and early conception. All these factors resulted in significant increase in income of livestock owner per month per animal post supplementation of area specific mineral mixture.
