Study on the effects of non-solvent and nanoparticle concentrations on surface properties of water-repellent biocompatible l-lactide/glycolide/trimethylene carbonate terpolymers

Transforming an intrinsically hydrophilic polymer into a durable superhydrophobic material has always been regarded as a challenge. In this study, a modified phase separation method was utilized to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces based on l-lactide, glycolide and trimethylene carbonate (LA/GL/TMC) terpolymers which have promising potentials in biomedical applications. The effects of non-solvent and nanoparticle concentrations on the surface properties of samples were systematically investigated. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D confocal microscopy, it was found that despite the fact that a hierarchical structure is needed for achieving superhydrophobic behavior, surface energy of samples should also be highly decreased. The modified phase separation method resulted in a profound presence of silica particles on the top layer of samples surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and SEM results also proved that less silica particles were brought up to the surface layer once the silica content was exceedingly high. Moreover, the obtained superhydrophobicity was used as a tool for suppressing the bacterial adhesion for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
