Luxuskonsumption, brown fat, and human obesity

A literature review briefly discusses points of difference and agreement in the controversy over the existence and function of dietary-induced thermogenesis (DIT) (luxuskonsumption) in body weight regulation. It is known that the metabolic rate is temporarily increased after eating, relative to the energy content of the meal, and that normal people consuming a low-energy diet (or obese patients on a reducing diet) show a decrease in resting metabolic rate. The controversy is mainly concerned with the interpretation of animal studies. If brown fat and DIT are important factors in body weight regulation, how can the observed experimental variations in brown fat activity without corresponding variations in obesity be explained? Aspects of this dilemma are discussed. (wz)
