Effect of geographic population and host cultivar on demographic parameters of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The life history and population parameters of three geographic populations (Miandoab, Moghan, and Kalposh) of Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on four sugar beet cultivars (Dorothea, Rozier, Persia, and Perimer) were evaluated using two-sex life table model. The results showed that the tested parameters had significant difference among the three geographic populations and four sugar beet cultivars. Miandoab population showed the highest fecundity and population parameters; whereas, Moghan population showed the lowest values of these parameters. Within populations, the longest larval period was in Moghan population reared on Rozier as compared to the others. Miandoab and Kalposh populations reared on Persia had the longest pupal period and developmental time of pre-adult. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was on Rozier in Miandoab population, and Persia in Moghan and Kalposh populations. The lowest net reproductive rate (R0) and shortest mean generation time (T) were on Dorothea in the three populations. The results of this study showed that Dorothea was the most unsuitable host for population growth of S. exigua and Miandoab population had higher potential for population increase than the others. The information obtained from the present study could be useful in selecting the best control method of this pest in particular region.
