A case of peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia in a dog | Un cas de hernie diaphragmatique péritonéo-péricardique chez un chien

A two-year-old male Pyrenean Shepherd dog presented for chronic diarrhea and vomiting associated with weight loss and general condition deterioration. Symptomatic management was unsuccessful. Further diagnostic (radiography with barium swallow and ultrasound) revealed a diaphragmatic hernia. The dog has escaped prior to the onset of symptoms, which supports the diagnosis with a possible traumatic etiology. Surgical exploration confirmed the diaphragmatic hernia ; it was found to be associated with a peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia. In light of the epidemiology of theses pathologies, it is likely that the latter was congenital and that the former was traumatic. After surgical correction of the two herniae, the gastrointestinal symptoms resolved and the dog resumed normal activity. The aim of this article is to present the medicosurgical management of a peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia and discuss its epidemiology and pathogenesis.
