The causes of hyperactivity can sometimes be linked with diet. Hyperactivity, or hyperkinesis, is a childhood trait characterized by excessive motor activity, distractability, excitability, impulsiveness and inattentiveness. Difficulty with learning and social behavior often are present. Overactivity is the main problem. Children's activity levels change with each stage of growth. Normal disciplinary measures often are inadequate. By school age, disturbing antisocial behavior can be a serious problem. Treatment ranges from psychiatric therapy, to use of stimulant drugs, to dietary modification. Elimination of foods containing artificial colors, flavors, salicylates, and flavor modifiers is the first step. Then a diet of all fresh, non-processed foods is required. This can limit food choices and impose long-term dietary deficiencies. Controversy surrounds this elimination diet. There are strong forces on either side of the issue, each presenting research to support their position. (kbc)
