The impact of anthropogenic perturbations on moist bank and open water communities at two fresh water tropical lakes of Rajasthan, India

Land - water interfaces are prone to trans - surface anthropogenic perturbations on which quality degradation on both side of interface can be keyed. Similarly, the knowledge of changes in open water communities helps understanding alterations in functional dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. This long term study was an effort to investigate the effects of anthropogenic perturbations on species diversity of moist bank and open water communities of two freshwater lakes of Udaipur, Rajasthan. The chosen determinants include species composition, importance value index, diversity indices, dominance – diversity relationships and concentration of dominance. The lakes, Udaisagar and Baghdara, although situated under similar climatic regime, differ significantly with respect to the magnitude of anthropogenic perturbations such as agricultural activities, intermittent sewage flushing, scrapping and grazing. Observations on species richness, evenness, Shannon-Weiner diversity function, dominance – diversity relationships and concentration of dominance indicated that moist bank community at Baghdara lake have large number of species with greater number of individuals of contributing species and that of Udaisagar was poor both in terms of species number and diversity. High concentration of dominance at Baghdara reflects that the dominant species at moist bank community of this lake were fewer in number and Lake Udaisagar with very low value of concentration of dominance indicated greater degree of disturbances. The results further indicated that anthropogenic perturbations have also altered the composition of open water macrophytic species. Species shift from interfaces and open water communities due to human disturbances may lead to severe implications in long run.
