Sampling for antimicrobial sensitivity testing: a practical consideration

There is a general consensus about the need to come up with standard protocols for the determination of antimicrobial sensitivities of bacterial fish pathogens. However, the criteria used to establish such protocols may be different depending on how and when the results are going to be used. Quickness and preciseness as well as the qualitative or quantitative nature of the results, could be prioritised differently by research scientists, diagnosticians and producers. In fact, we may be facing the need to implement two protocols, which would have to be compatible with each other (i.e., produce results that can be evaluated in parallel), namely, a "field" protocol and a laboratory protocol. The "field" protocol may give quick information about the development of a bacterial disease at the farm, such as the establishment and efficacy of treatment, while the laboratory based method should provide the tools for interpretation, quantification and comparison of the events taking place in different farms over a longer time scale.
