A New method for measuring the body density of obese adults

Since weight loss in obese patients does not necessarily reflect fat loss, an easy method of measuring body fat is required. The common methods, of measuring skinfold thickness, total submersion in water, or inhalation of a fat-soluble-gas dilution are unpleasant and difficult. A modified version of the water displacement method of measuring body volume and density, allowing the patient's head to remain above water, but enclosed in a clear plastic lid was tested on 19 obese women. Gases in the air space around the head are measured which determines the fat content of the head. When compared to the total submersion technique, results were comparable within 0.3 kg of fat. (kbc)
