Fruiting characteristics of Rosa taxa

The number of fruit produced on 1- to 4-year-old fruiting wood was the highest on the 1-year-old shoots. Comparatively, 2-year-old branches produced only about half, and 3-year-old branches only a third or a quarter of this number of fruit. In addition to the reduction in fruit number, there was also an increase in the number of fruit growing singly. This difference was the most pronounced for variants of Rosa canina and for 2-year-old fruiting wood of R. rubiginosa. R. zalana was the only taxon where the number and ratio of fruits and fruit clusters did not differ significantly on fruiting wood of different ages. Fruit size depended on the age of the fruiting wood, with the best fruit, in general, being found on 1-2(-3)-year-old fruiting wood. Reductions in the diameter, mass and fruit ratio of the hips could be observed even on 3-year-old fruiting wood. The aging of the wood was most clear for R. canina and its variants and for R. inodora, while it was less obvious for R. rubiginosa and could not be detected for R. zalana. With an increase in the cluster size, a slight but significant difference could be observed in the physical parameters of the fruit in some taxa. A slight increase in the fruit diameter and mass was recorded for R. zalana and the R. canina cultivar 'Inermis', while in the case of R. inodora, there was first an increase and then a decrease in fruit size as the number of fruit in the cluster increased.
