Growth and yield of rice-wheat cropping sequence in raised bed planting system

Two field experiments, one each on well drained and poorly drained soils were conducted on wheat and rice cropping sequence (RWCS) for three years commencing from rabi 2004 at Kamal. Wheat was sown in conventional method and on raised beds followed by rice transplanting without puddling on the same beds after their renovation. In wheat crop yield attributing characters viz, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, spike weight, grain and straw yields, root length, root spread and root weight were higher in raised bed sowing as compared to conventional method of sowing at both well drained and poorly drained soils. In rice crop, the plant height, number of panicles per hill, number of grains per panicle, panicle length, panicle weight, test weight and grain and straw yields did not differ significantly in raised bed and conventional transplanting in both well drained soil and in poorly drained soil, except the number of panicles per hill, panicle length and grain yield were higher in raised bed transplanting as compared to conventional transplanting in first year only (2005). The higher root length, root spread and root weight of rice were observed in bed transplanting as compared to conventional transplanting at both sites.
