Effect of planting method and nitrogen fertilization on relative performance of orchardgrass strains

The effect of planting method on relative performance of eight orchardgrass strains was studied. The planting methods in which the strains were compared consisted of: (1) 3-foot drill rows, (2) 1-foot drill rows, (3) broadcast alone, (4) with alfalfa, alternate 1-foot drill rows, (5) with alfalfa, broadcast, and (6) with birdsfoot trefoil, broadcast. Mean orchardgrass performance in the latter two methods was considered indicative of the true potential of the strains, and the accuracy of other planting methods was judged by the degree of similarity of strain performance to their performance in the broadcast-with-legume methods. The planting method involving 3-foot drill rows was not as efficient in determining forage yields of strains as the other three methods. Total forage yields of grass plus legume were not reliable as indications of strain performance. Relative panicle productivity of strains was determined with equal accuracy in each of the first four planting methods. Strains were evaluated more accurately for nitrogen content of forage when grown broadcast alone than when grown in drill rows alone or with alfalfa. Considering all attributes studied, under the conditions of this experiment broadcast plots grown alone gave more accurate strain evaluation than 3-foot or 1-foot drill rows, or alternate 1-foot rows with alfalfa. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on relative performance of eight orchardgrass strains was studied when grown alone in 3-foot rows, 1-foot rows, and broadcast plots. Under the conditions of this experiment no appreciable interaction occurred between strains and nitrogen levels in forage yield, panicle production, or nitrogen content of forage.
