A review article addresses statistical factors pertinent to nutritional epidemiological studies. Particular attention is focused on appropriate sample size for the study, the organization of collected data, statistical data treatment and its reduction, and statistical data evaluation. Topics include guidelines for organizing data; the development of frequency distribution and summary statistics; the transformation of data to assess relationships; and the testing of the significance of the data and assigning confidence limits to the statistically-calculated norms.
