Predicting the performance of pop corn hybrids from single cross data
1949
Petersen, E.L. | Eldredge, J.C. | Johnson, I.J.
The data obtained from a study of yield, lodging, and popping volume of three-way crosses in pop corn show a high correlation between the predicted and actual performances in each case based upon the performance of their recombination single crosses. There were some crosses which failed to perform as well as expected and others which exceeded their predictions. Nevertheless, the agreement in general was very good, as evidenced by the highly significant correlation coefficients of .818 for popping expansion, .766 for yield, and .823 for lodging. The results obtained in this experiment give evidence that sufficient accuracy may be obtained in predicting three-way cross performance to make it a valuable procedure in pop corn breeding.
