The aim of this contribution is to provide an improved perception of the economic impact of creating a free trade area within and outside the Mediterranean region. It is important to understand the general economic and political framework in which the so-called Barcelona process will develop in the coming years. This involves an analysis of a number of key indicators related to the economies of the Northern and Southern Mediterranean countries, i.e. demography, economy, agriculture, production, consumption, and trade with special reference to the fruit and vegetable sector.
