Biochemical and physiological changes influenced by saline water stress in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

An experiment comprising of five levels of salinity treatment and seven different varieties was conducted to study changes in physiological parameters viz., germination percentage, relative water content, salt tolerance index and biochemical parameters viz., total chlorophyll, free proline content and lipid peroxidation. The physiological parameters like germination percentage, relative water content, salt tolerance index decreased under salinity particularly in sensitive varieties. Salinity stress influenced biochemical parameters like proline content and lipid peroxidation. Proline content increased and lipid peroxidation decreased in salt tolerant varieties as compared to susceptible varieties. The germination of chickpea varieties was affected under saline irrigations particularly in susceptible varieties and was inversely related to osmolyte proline content. Based on the results, it can be concluded that chickpea variety GJG-6 was found to be the most tolerant and GG-2 was found to be susceptible among chickpea varieties responding to application of saline water irrigation during germination.
