Selection of Pupation Site by Drosophila Melanogaster and D. Simulans

Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans larvae were tested to determine their choice of pupation site in relation to larval density and moisture content of the medium. A dry medium produced a change in pupation behavior in D. simulans but not in D. melanogaster populations. Both species responded to a medium with high water content as follows: (1) a higher proportion of pupae were found on the sides of the vials rather than on the medium, (2) there was an increase in the total number of pupae produced, (3) there was an increase in pupal mortality, and (4) the total number of adults produced was not affected by moisture content of the medium.
