Crop residue requirements for water erosion control in six southern states

Crop residues needed for water erosion control in South Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina were calculated. Maize, soyabeans, small grain crops, cotton and sorghum are grown in rotation, double cropping or continuously and the land ploughed, conservation tillage applied, disked or ploughed and disked. Residue production yields ranged from 1.7-3.36 t/ha for continuous sorghum with disk tillage to 4.73-6.90 t/ha for soyabeans/small grain crop with conservation tillage. In all areas examined, conservation tillage significantly reduced potential soil losses. In 4 of the 6 states 60% of crop residues (6 million t/ha) are needed for water erosion control; the remaining 40% is available for other uses. In Alabama and Mississippi, approx. 90% of crop residues are needed for water erosion control.
