Inhibition of chemical communication between male and female bollworms (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by sublethal amounts of permethrin

The effect of topical applications of sublethal amounts of permethrin on the behavior of bollworms, Heliothis zea (Boddie), attractancy of females, response of males to traps, and the effects of field applications were investigated. Results showed that untreated females attract two-thirds of the males captured in traps compared with females treated with sublethal amounts of permethrin; 70% of males responding to pheromone traps were untreated compared with males treated with sublethal amounts of permethrin; males respond equally to pheromone traps located in untreated and treated areas of cotton fields sprayed with permethrin; significantly fewer moths are found during daylight hours in areas of cotton fields treated with 0.055 kg permethrin (AI) per hectare; and moth capture at night is reduced on sugar lines located in the middle of cotton fields sprayed the same day with 0.11 kg permethrin (AI) per hectare.
