A comparison of carbohydrate metabolism after sucrose, sorbitol, and fructose meals in normal and diabetic subjects

In 10 normal and 6 diabetic subjects fed 35 g of either sucrose, sorbitol or fructose as part of a 400-calorie breakfast, sucrose resulted in the highest increase in plasma glucose and sorbitol in the lowest glucose response, with fructose intermediate. Increases in plasma insulin followed a similar pattern in normal subjects, but test meals caused no significant differences in diabetics. These findings suggest that fructose or sorbitol (nonsucrose nutritive sweeteners) as components of meals result in lower glucose levels in both normal and diabetic subjects; differences in plasma glucose after the test meals are not attributable to differences in insulin secretion by diabetics. Thus, nonsucrose sweetening agents, by reducing elevations in plasma glucose, may be beneficial in the diabetic diet.
