This study evaluates the use of three satellite band combinations (indices) for soil erosion studies, particularly to determinate erosion risk areas. Images were taken with a difference of five years, in different seasons. The evaluated indices were: Brightness index, Fractional Vegetation Cover, and Distance from the Soil Line Index. Indices were applied to subscenes of a region with arid-tropical climatic characteristics. The Brightness index generated reliable cartography of potentially eroded areas in similar climatic conditions to those of the study area. The other two indices allowed us to determine that soil erosion had increased in the five-year period and that, because of the changes, some areas can be considered potentially eroded.
