Effect of in situ Moisture Conservation Measures on Growth and Yield of Maize under Model Watershed

A field experiment was conducted during karif season of 2010–11 in farmer's field at model watershed, Neeralkatti village, Dharwad district of Karnataka to study the impact of in situ soil moisture conservation practices inmaize. The crop planted on broad bedand furrows (BBF) recorded significantly higher plant height, number of green leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, total dry matter production compared to rest of the treatments. The maximum dry matter accumulation was recorded in BBF at all the growth stages (49.1, 59.7 and 42.7 g plant⁻¹ at 60, 90 DAS and at harvest). The crop raised on broad bed and furrows recorded significantly higher grain yield (65.3 q ha⁻¹) and straw yield (101.3 q ha⁻¹) over the farmer's practice. It was 7.1 per cent higher over compartment bunding. Similarly, the yield attributing characters like cob weight, test weight, grain yield per plant and shelling per cent was also higher in crop sown on broad bed and furrows.
