New Races of Common Bunt Useful to Determine Resistance of Wheat to Dwarf Bunt
1978
Metzger, R. J. | Hoffmann, J. A.
Two new races of the common bunt fungus, Tilletia caries (DC.) Tul., were obtained from inoculations with teliospore mixtures. One race, T-29, was virulent on wheat, Triticum aestivum L., cultivars carrying combinations of bunt resistance genes Bt1,2,7,9 and 10. The other race, T-30, was virulent on cultivars carrying combinations of Bt 1,2,4,6,7,9 and 10. Using these new races in combination with other races of the common bunt fungi, breeders can identify wheat selections resistant to most races of the dwarf bunt fungus, T. controversa Kühn, known to be present in the northwestern U.S.
