Effects of chromium and yeast supplements on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in diabetic men

A clinical double-blind, random crossover study was conducted with and without the administration of chromium (Cr) supplements in 43 outpatient diabetic men to test the use of Cr in improving carbohydrate utilization. The men received orally 3 of 4 supplement types (inorganic Cr trichloride; brewer's yeast containing organic Cr as glucose tolerance factor; brewer's yeast extract without glucose tolerance factor; and a placebo) for 4 months each. The organic and inorganic Cr supplements increased hair and red blood cell Cr levels by about 25%, but no effect was noted on fasting glucose and lipids or on the glucose response to a standard meal or to tolbutamide. Ketosis-resistant sub-groups, however, exhibited a significant postprandial insulin increase following brewer's yeast dosing containing glucose tolerance factor. (wz)
