Difficulty in changing nutritional habits of individuals after age 18, the high cost of hospital care and medicine, and the trend towards increasing birth rate, are factors which make the development of good nutritional practices at an early age vitally important. The need to assure adequate nutrition for the fetus, infant, and child has been given the highest priority. Further, since over a half-million children were born to teenagers in 1978 (a 31% increase since 1950), teenage mothers need special nutrition attention. Of particular importance is the WIC program, the effectiveness of which is discussed in terms of what is best for the infant. Mechanisms covered to improve infant nutritional care include: development of a human milk banking program; new-mother classes; foodservice for child care operations; picture-word recipes to educate retarded and handicapped children; and use of a relaxed approach to feeding. A direct approach by nutritionists to parents about their children's diets and nutritional habits appears to work best. (wz)
