Influence of weaning age on post-weaning growth performance in mandya lambs

This study investigated the influence of weaning age on post-weaning growth in Mandya lambs maintained under intensive system of management. Post-weaning performance was assessed based on the changes in live weight and average daily gain (ADG). A total of 39 lambs were randomly allocated to one of the three groups (Gr-I: lambs weaned at the age of eighth week; Gr-II: lambs weaned at tenth week of age and Gr-III: lambs weaned at twelfth week of age). In all the lambs body weights were recorded on bi-weekly basis until 24ᵗʰ week of age. Data revealed no significant difference (P>0.05) in post-weaning growth either in terms of live body weight or ADG, between the groups. However, in terms of gender effect, the overall growth in male lambs during post-weaning was significantly higher than that offemale lambs (P<0.05). The present study demonstrated that young Mandya lambs, at an age as early as two months could be successfully weaned. This system of lamb rearing could be a value addition in terms of accomplishing best possible post-weaning growth while reducing prolonged and undue lactation stress on dams.
