Elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in older endurance athletes

A clinical study of endurance-trained athletes and untrained men, each of 2 different age groupings (60-62 and 26-28 years), revealed that the athletes had higher maximal oxygen uptake values and lower body fatness levels than untrained men, regardless of age, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) was significantly higher in the older athletes group than in the 3 other groups. Total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) were higher in the older athletes than in the younger groups. TC/HDLC ratios were lower in athletes and in the untrained young men than in the older athletes group. These results indicate that the favorable lipoprotein profile of older men who exercise regularly may contribute to a reduced coronary heart disease risk. (wz)
