DRGs collect data for ADA testimony: Effect of DRGs on demand for home-delivered meals

Recent activities and current status of the effect of Medicare diagnosis-related groups (DRG's) with respect to home-delivered meals are briefly summarized for 5 states: Washington, Florida, Maryland, Kansas, and Iowa. This information supports the American Dietetic Association's historical concurrence with the recommendation to increase federal appropriations for Titles IIIb, IIIc2, and IV, made by the American Association of Retired Persons. Most areas reported an increased demand for home-delivered meals, and a limited resource appropriations to meet this demand. Deleterious effects on patients have been observed by dietitians since the implementation of Medicare's prospective payment system based on DRG's.(wz)
