Novel α-alumina@CuO-Fe2O3nanofluid for potential application in PEM fuel cell cooling systems: Towards neutralizing the increase of electrical conductivity

In the present study, the surface of α-alumina nanoparticles was modified with CuO and Fe₂O₃ through a surface deposition route. Different aqueous nanofluids of pure α-alumina (Al) and α-alumina@CuO-Fe₂O₃ (CuFeAl) nanoparticles, each with three weight percent of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, were prepared with various amounts of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). An adequate amount of SDS was determined by measuring the electrical conductivity (EC) of the synthesized samples and DI water to cap the charged surface of the nanoparticles. Through investigating heat transfer performance and viscosity measurements for the synthesized nanofluids, significant heat transfer improvement was observed for the ones with sufficient SDS. The CuFeAl 0.3-water nanofluid with a sufficient SDS content showed 21.4 % heat transfer enhancement. In addition, such nanofluid resulted in the EC value as low as DI water (6 μS/cm) through neutralizing the EC increment, which potentially can be applied in PEM fuel cell cooling systems.
