Air drying produces significant irreversible changes in volcanic ash soils. Air-dried samples with clay texture in the field appear to have sandy texture according to laboratory analyses. Air-drying also markedly affects cation-exchange capacity, soluble P, and soluble Fe. The nature and extent of changes in the latter two properties vary with different methods of analysis. Air-drying decreases the pH slightly. These results show that mechanical and chemical analyses of volcanic ash soils more accurately indicate field conditions when samples contain moisture at field capacity.
