Computerized diet analysis: Friend or foe?

Computers offer great potential to improve the quality and quantity of nutritional information. These changes have important implications for professionals, who should be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of this new technology. Nutrient data bases save time in calculating nutrient contents of several foods and provide greater accuracy. Food tables now in use for manual calculations have been difficult to update. Computer data bases can be easily changed, and at less expense. By using computers more time will be available to the nutritionist for interpretating factors, other than nutritional intake, that define nutrition problems. The nutrient analysis program of the University of Manitoba, which consists of a number of interrelated programs, is discussed. (emc)
