Recent progress on Schottky sensors based on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides

2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS₂, MoSe₂, WS₂, and WSe₂, have unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, and thus they are ideal sensing materials. 2D TMD-based sensors have proven to exhibit dramatically enhanced sensitivity and selectivity when fabricated with a Schottky junction, which enables their extensive application in photodetection, gas sensing, biosensing, etc. This review highlights the advances in Schottky sensors based on 2D TMDs. The methods for the preparation of 2D TMDs are described and the selection of suitable methods is also discussed. The vital applications of 2D TMDs in Schottky sensors such as photodetectors, gas sensors, strain sensors, and biosensors are summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the structural characteristics and performance parameters of the devices are reviewed. The strategies for fabricating high-performance Schottky sensors are also presented. Finally, an outlook is delivered and the future research directions and challenges are discussed.
