The mean individual fecundity of mass parthenogenetic cultures of uniform age is maximum when there is a mean area of about 1.2 square centimetres per individual on the floor of the chamber. Reduction of the fecundity under more crowded conditions occurred because oviposition was completely inhibited for a greater proportion of individuals and the number of eggs laid by ovipositing individuals was reduced. Crowding during periods other than when oviposition would normally occur did not cause a reduction in fecundity. It is suggested that the reduction in fecundity is a manifestation of ‘stress' caused by jostling.
