Oviposition patterns of koa seedworm and litchi fruit moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) on macadamia and litchi in Hawaii

Samples taken from the field when all sizes of macadamia nuts were present indicated that females of the koa seedworm, Cryptophlebia illepida (Butler), and of the litchi fruit moth, C. ombrodelta (Lower), seldom oviposited on nuts < 20 mm in diameter. In the same samples, > 90% of the nuts had hardened shells by the time they reached 29 mm in diameter, except for the cultivar 'Purvis'. Samples taken early in the season, when nut sizes were smaller, showed that smaller size nuts were accepted more frequently as oviposition sites. On litchi, similar studies conducted at four sites with four cultivars showed that female Cryptophlebia exhibit similar fruit size-oviposition patterns. These results indicate that treatment and monitonng activities need not commence until nuts or fruits are > 20 mm in diameter.
