Inability of storage bruchidae to infest winged beans (psophocarpus tetragonolobus)

Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), Callosobruchus chinensis (L.), Callosobruchus analis (F.), Callosobruchus phaseoli (Gyllenhal), Callosobruchus rhodesianus (Pic), Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boh.) and Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) were unable to infest a variety of winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (L.)). All species laid eggs, and their newly hatched larvae penetrated the testa of the beans, but the developing larvae died during their first or second instars. C. maculatus and C. chinensis were similarly incapable of infesting a further seventeen varieties of winged bean. The possible presence of toxins in the testa of winged beans was investigated by allowing C. maculatus larvae to develop in diets of cowpea flour mixed with winged bean or cowpea testa. The presence of winged bean testa did not significantly depress survival of the larvae below the level of survival on diets incorporating cowpea testa indicating that the major toxic or inhibitory component of winged beans is in the cotyledons.
