Holocene Insects and Paleoecology of the Au Sable River, Michigan

Taxonomic identification of the fossil beetle fauna at a site in north—central Michigan, coupled with information on the present—day habitats, diets, and distributions of the identified species, made it possible to draw conclusions about the climate and ecology of the site in the middle Holocene. About 150 taxa from 24 different families of Coleoptera were recovered in 110 kg of organic materials from the banks of the Au Sable River, near Oscoda, Michigan. The materials were taken from a 4.5 m ascending sequence of clays, silty clays, and silty fine sands, and were dated at 4020 ± 30 and 4130 ± 90 yr BP (before present). The insects are from assemblages that lived in a mixed forest region with fluvial and marsh habitats along a river draining to the maximum Lake Nipissing level. At 4000 yr BP the climate of north—central Michigan was very similar to that of today, or only slightly cooler.
