Rooting Ability of Merion Kentucky Bluegrass Sod Grown on Mineral and Muck Soil

Sods grown on mineral and muck soils in several Northeast and Midwest states were compared for rooting ability in three fielcl tests with a pulling device designed to shear sod horizontally from the soil surface. Glassfaced root observation containers were used in one test to follow daily root development. Rooting ability of the sods varied more by sod source than by muck or mineral soil type. There was a negative correlation of early rooting of sods with well developed rhizome systems. Cutting sod thin (1.9 cm) gave better early rooting than thicker (3.8 cm) cut sods. There was no significant correlation between root weights and carbohydrate content of tops and roots of sods grown in root observation containers for 22 days.
