Changes in adipocyte cellularity in children ten to 18 years of age

Because of the paucity of information on changes in adipocyte cell size and count in normal humans relative to changes in total body fat, a study assessed adipocyte cell size and count, and total body fat in samples serially taken and measurements during 3 consecutive annual examinations of 34 boys and 35 girls (ages 10-18). The mean increment in total body fat during adolescence was near 0 for the boys and positive for girls. Both sexes produced negative mean adipocyte size increments and positive mean adipocyte count increments. Sex-specific age-to-age corrections were statistically-significant for cell number and total body fat, but not cell size. The results indicate that total body fat increase during adolescence may be due to increased fat cell number, and that yearly changes in fat cell size may offer little to understanding total body fat changes.
