Interaction between nutrition and aging: a summary of effects on the cardiovascular system
1992
Lakatta, E.G.
The marked increase in the prevalence of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and cardiac arrhythmias in the elderly may be linked to age-associated changes in the ion content of the cell that could be modified by dietary intervention. However, a causal link between age-associated changes in cell membrane structure and function and the diet has not been firmly established. Additional research is desperately needed to characterize the changes that occur in cell membrane properties with aging and how these relate to diet, exercise, or drugs.
