The 1987-1988 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey (NFCS 1987-1988) is the most recent of many USDA studies of food consumption. The content of the surveys has been expanded, and their methodologies have been refined over the years. The survey is used now, as in the past, to describe food consumption behavior and to assess the nutritional content of diets. Information from the surveys has many policy and program uses in the areas of food production and marketing, food safety, food assistance, and nutrition education.
