The impact of development of the gut on infant nutrition
1987
Lebentahl, E. | Leung, Y.K.
The developmental patterns of the gastrointestinal tract during gestation, perinatal periods, and periods that follow are discussed. Mechanisms involved in digestion and absorption in the perinatal period are the rationale behind modern feeding practices and the use of various caloric densities, osmolalities, and dietary supplements such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. It is suggested that the macro- and micronutrients given during the newborn period be adjusted both quantitatively and qualitatively to suit the need of the infant, particularly if it is premature or compromised.(rah)
