Enzymatic and inhibitory activities of cashew tree gum exudate

The gum exudate from the Anacardium occidentale tree has been analysed for carbohydrate, Kjeldahl nitrogen, protein and phenols, and for the activities of polyphenoloxidase, peroxidase, chitinase, trypsin-, chymotrypsin-, subtilisin- and papain-inhibitors. These materials and activities were shown to be present in varying amounts in the several samples examined. The possible role of the cashew tree gum exudate in the defence mechanisms of the plant is discussed.
